New Bikes for Kids is a "feel good charity". We are not out the save the world or to cure cancer. These are noble causes and absolutely should not be dismissed! We simply just want to change lives by enhancing the quality and substance of children's lives. Nothing can brighten a child's life more than providing a child with a brand new bike that they can truly call their own. Not to mention the health benefits, learning to ride, learning to balance, and pride of ownership! A little less time in front of the TV is a great thing too! Specifically, we are after economically challenged kids. Children with one parent, foster kids, and kids where their families have come under financial hardships and just bad luck!
New toys will come and go with every new fad or latest movie craze, but bicycles, on the other hand, stand the test of time. A new bike can and will be around for probably about 10 years! And too often it is one of those items deemed "too expensive", or "we just don't have the funds right now", or "maybe next year" — in favor of a cheaper "just out" new toy for right now. While shopping at a couple of major retail chains for the last 8 years, I have two children, 8 and 4 mind you. Always having to stop in the "toy section", I noticed something not really strange, but very apparent: new bikes range from $19.99 to $300.00 and over, and you can buy a regular 20 inch bike for $29.00 in 2008. Mind you, this is not a top of the line bicycle with all the bells and whistles, but absolutely perfect for a child who doesn't have one.
It was then I realized my simple mission in life, get these low cost bikes into the possession of kids who can use them and use them right now through the kindness and contributions of people like you and me with a passion for achieving the miles and miles of smiles their donations will bring. To me it is a simple mission: find people who are able to donate $29.00 each and find lots of them and get it done. We also take pride in the fact that 95% of the net proceeds goes into our mission!
And now that this website has been established, and also the mission we are on, my hope is that bicycle wholesalers will find us and sell us quantities of new bicycles at cost so that we may acquire nicer, costlier bicycles cheaper so that we can provide children with ultimately nicer bicycles.
